Wrynose Pass from Grasmere

Date of Walk: 21/5/2001
Mountains Climbed: -
Length of Walk: 18.2 miles
Starting Point: Grasmere Hotel, Grasmere Grid Ref: NY 338078
Route: Grasmere, Red Bank, Chapel Stile, Great Langdale, Blea Tarn, Wrynose Pass, Three Shire Stone, Little Langdale, Elterwater, Red Bank, Grasmere.

On Monday the 21st we woke up to another beautiful, sunny day, and we decided to do an 18 mile walk, which was the longest on the walk sheet from the Hotel. It started as before, by going up by Red Bank.

From here, we turned towards Chapel Stile and into the Great Langdale Valley, where we had stunning views of the Langdale Pikes.

Walking through Great Langdale, we were able to stop and take in glorious views of all the surrounding mountains, including Crinkle Crags, and Bowfell was for once not covered in cloud.

From Great Langdale, we walked along the road by Side Pike (Lingmoor Fell) and were able to observe Blea Tarn from the road. We could of course not stray off the road to have a better look.

Soon afterwards we reached the fork in the road and the start of Wrynose and Hardknott Passes.
Wrynose Pass the start of wrynose pass

After our first trip to the Lake District in April 2000, where we travelled over Wrynose and Hardknott in the car, in conditions where we could hardly see further than the end of the bonnet, we were looking forward to seeing what the pass really looked like.

The warning signs gave us a good indication of what we were in for.

The road soon starts to climb, and by the time we reached Wrynose Bridge, it felt as though we had been fellwalking after all.

By the time we reached the Three Shire Stone at the summit of Wrynose Pass, the road was blocked and this is where we had to turn round, but not before taking in the views of Pike O'Blisco, Cold Pike and the Coniston Fells on the other side of the pass.

After retracing our steps back to the start of the pass, we had a splendid walk at the side of Fletcher's Wood to Elterwater, and from there back to Grasmere via Elterwater.
